"It's Not Just About Finance"

Kids, Coronavirus Fears, and the Markets

Last Christmas, our youngest son gave me a T-Shirt that says “You Don’t Scare Me, I’ve Got Four Kids.”

It’s one of my favorite shirts.

What’s interesting is how my kids don’t believe I’m afraid of anything…and for the most part, they’re right.

On the other hand, they tend to think I’m boring – and in their minds they’re right – when I talk about the markets, how numbers are skewed, and geo-political events.

So, this past weekend I was fascinated with the questions they asked me about the over-the-top-hysteria we’re living in.

It reminded me of why we need to talk sensibly to our kids about the historic events happening right in front of our eyes.

Anyway, our daughter (the oldest) seemed worried about us – older folks – being more susceptible to death from the Kung Flu.

At the same time, our son (the youngest) was asking me if this was a good time for him to invest in the market.

The middle two (sons) seemed more reserved as if they were waiting to see how I answered the other two.

It was of those perfect opportunities to bond with and hopefully teach them valuable information to help them in the future.

To my daughter I said, “Honey, if you got sick with a flu that has a 98% recovery rate, would you worry about it?”

And to the youngest son I said, “If you could buy a stock today that has a 98% chance of going up, would you buy it?”

The look on their faces told me they immediately “got it” and acknowledged it with their standard, “Yeah, Yeah, Okay Dad.”

A bit later my middle son said, “Hey Dad, Can I read Your March Newsletter where you talk about the Coronavirus linking to 5G?”

I said, “Sure, give me fifteen bucks and I’ll email it to you.”

He gave me that Scooby-Do tilted head look like, HUH?

I then reminded him of one of my “boring sayings”, when you have skin in the game, you’ll learn more than someone who doesn’t.

Get some skin in the game by joining our “…In Plain English” club.

It will be the best $15 you’ll ever spend…and it’s cheaper than a case of toilet paper.
